READING FLUENCY
Fluency Practice:
Help your child become a better reader and increase their words read per minute by allowing him/her to read fluency passages aloud to you at home.
If your child makes several errors while reading and or their reading does not sound like a spoken conversation, they need to practice reading aloud for fluency.
The more time spent on decoding words while reading, the less likely comprehension is taking place. Early readers use up energy trying to decode words and their reading sounds robotic or monotone (i.e. Not Fluent)
By Fifth grade your child should be reading a minimum of ___ w.p.m (words per minute) at the beginning of the school year. At mid-year ___w.p.m. As the fifth grade year ends your child should be reading ___w.p.m.
Even if your child is on target with words read per minute he/she can still benefit and improve their reading fluency by practicing reading passages aloud.
